Local Teachers attend Professional Development Workshop about Agriculture.

June 15, 2018

Nearly 30 teachers from across Northwest Iowa attended a professional development workshop about the agriculture industry hosted by Dordt College, Siouxland Ag in the Classroom, and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Sioux County. The day included a farm chat with a local farmer, a visit to Siouxland Energy in Sioux Center, dairy farm stop at Summit Dairy, and tour of AMPI in Sanborn.

While at Summit Dairy Johnny Westra took the teachers around the farm, taking them through the free-stall barns to educate the teachers about the day to day operation of a dairy farm. After walking through the free-stall barn the group moved to the feeding area. Teachers had the opportunity to see all the different ingredients that are added into the dairy cattle’s diet. After learning about feed ingredients Johnny took the group into the milking parlor.

After visiting Summit Dairy, the workshop traveled to Sanborn to tour the AMPI Cheese plant. Harold Peters, plant manager, did a presentation about the plant and provided a tour of the new addition viewing the beginning stages for cheese making in addition to where the milk trucks deliver the milk.
